How to Install a Custom/Paid SSL Certificate

Learn how to install a premium SSL certificate on your domain using cPanel or Plesk.

While free SSL certificates like Let’s Encrypt work for most sites, some businesses prefer paid SSL certificates for extended validation, warranty, or brand reputation. Here’s how to install a custom SSL on your domain.

1. Gather Your SSL Files

  • Certificate file (.crt) – issued by your SSL provider.

  • Intermediate/CA bundle (.ca-bundle) – provided by the SSL vendor.

  • Private key (.key) – generated when you created the CSR (Certificate Signing Request).

2. Log in to Your Hosting Panel

  • From the Client Portal, select your hosting service.

  • Click Login to cPanel/Plesk.

3. Install in cPanel

  • Navigate to SSL/TLS → Manage SSL Sites.

  • Choose your domain.

  • Paste the certificate, private key, and CA bundle in the respective fields.

  • Click Install Certificate.

4. Install in Plesk

  • Go to Websites & Domains → SSL/TLS Certificates.

  • Upload your SSL certificate and CA bundle.

  • Assign the SSL to your domain and click Secure.

5. Verify the Installation

  • Visit your domain at https://yourdomain.com.

  • Look for the padlock icon in the browser.

  • Use an online tool like SSL Checker to confirm proper installation.

6. Renewal & Management

  • Paid SSLs usually last 1–2 years.

  • Renew before expiry to avoid downtime.

  • Update the certificate in your hosting panel once renewed.

Tip: Extended Validation (EV) SSLs display company details in the certificate, providing extra trust for e-commerce or financial websites.
